What is a label element?

A label element is a unit of information within a product label such as Ingredient List of Nutritional information

Labelwise, for food products contain a list of 20 label elements, certain elements are applicable to specific product categories and or countries. 

 

# Name Definition
1 Marketing Name (Brand or Fantasy) The name of the product as it is seen in the picture, it might be a commercial, such as KitKat Chocolate
2 Legal, Customary or Descriptive Name This is the description of the product, it provides a descriptive name, in most cases, it is near the ingredients list, for example, in pasta sauce that has Marketing Name "Alfonso Pasta Sauce" the descriptive name might be "Tomato Sauce"
3 List of Ingredients The list of ingredients of a product, in case of raw material, it is not applicable, this list is normally provided in descending order of quantity and it includes % for certain ingredients, brackets for compound ingredients and specific styles to highlight allergens
4 Allergen Information The label indicates the allergens present in a product, those allergens are adjacent to the ingredients list or even embedded into the ingredients list by highlighting Allergen ingredients in certain font/style such as bold, like Water, Sugar, Egg
5 Alcoholic Strength Only for alcoholic beverages, it is a numerical value expressed in %
6 Durability Date - Best Before Normally indicates a date or indicates the durability from the production date, e.g. 6 months
7 Lot/Batch Code, Production Date It is an alphanumerical indication, normally not prominent and displayed in the bottom of the pack. Production date indicates when the products have been manufactured, not displayed in a prominent position, mostly in the bottom or back of the packaging
8 Storage Conditions For foods marked with a best-before date, storage instructions should be given for the unopened food if any particular storage conditions need to be employed for the food to retain its specific properties until the stated date.
9 Net Quantity / ℮-Mark Providing the quantity of product in volume or weight, in the case of Europe it has a large pictorial e-mark
10 Nutrition Information The nutritional composition of the product, in most cases displayed in a tabular format but in small packages also in linear text
11 Number of Pieces/servings / Portion Size This information is mostly displayed in case of packaging that contains multiple servings or portions, such as cereal bar box that contains 6 servings (bars)
12 Instructions for Use Where it would otherwise be difficult for consumers or caterers to make appropriate use of food, instructions for use are given, e.g. in Frozen foods, these can include pictograms for example with an oven and the time required to defrost
13 Product Warnings it provides warnings to consumers, such as do not exceed recommended intake or dosage, Xylitol is not safe for dogs etc- 
14 Company Name and Address Packaging should contain the name and address of the company which either produces the product or distributes it, there are cases where both manufacturer and distributor addresses are displayed. This class includes also brand or company website addresses.
15 Food Production License No. This information varies from country to country, it might be a number of a code mostly nearby the Company name and address, in China, it is called "SC Number"
16 Indication of Origin (Country/Provenance) It specifies from which country the product is sourced, it might be stated as "Product of Italy" or "Produce of Madagascar"
17 Nutrition/Health Claims/Marketing claims that touch a nutritional or health value must be rigorous in nature, they are like "Low Sodium" or more than "50% of Vitamin C", more specifically health claims can be like "support the immune defence" or "help lower cholesterol". There also claims that are more marketing oriented such as "Best Quality Pizza" "The healthy choice", or "authentic croissant", typically are not substantiated and do not represent a fact as instead nutrition or health claims must do
18 Label Presentation/Pictorials This is the front-of-pack image representation
19 Special Mark Packaging may contain other symbols and marks such as GMO FREE, Suitable for Vegetarians, and Quality marks mostly present in the front or back of the package
20 Front of Pack (FOP) Front-of-pack nutritional information, normally summarises in a graphical way the key nutrients of the product
