Monitoring Proposed Regulatory Changes

How to track draft regulations and laws before they come into effect.

Tracking regulations before they are enforced is critical for early compliance. Because different markets notify the public in different ways, there is no single "Proposed" button. Instead, you can build a targeted search strategy using specific filters.

The Search Strategy

To isolate proposed changes from current laws, you need to combine a topic with specific document types that typically carry "draft" or "future" information.

  • Step 1: Select Topic: Start by selecting the Topic filter for 'Policies and Laws'.
  • Step 2: Select Document Types: In the "Post Types" filter, select 'Guidance' and 'News'.
    • Why? Official regulations are usually final. By filtering for Guidance and News instead of Regulation, you capture the discussions, drafts, and announcements that precede the actual law.

Refining the Monitor

Once the basic strategy is set, you can narrow it down to your specific needs:

  • Keywords: Add keywords for the specific regulatory topic (e.g., "Titanium Dioxide").

  • Markets: Filter by the country or region of interest (e.g., "European Union").

  • Sources: You can target specific sources known for publishing drafts, such as WTO Notifications or EFSA Publications (for the EU).

Saving as a Feed

Once your search results accurately reflect the "proposed changes" you are looking for:

  1. Click the Save to Feeds button.

  2. Give your feed a clear name (e.g., "Draft Laws - EU Additives").

  3. You will now receive automatic updates whenever new information matches this "future-looking" criteria.
